Our mandate is to empower struggling youth readers in the community, guiding them towards proficiency, where they achieve grade-level reading skills or advance by 1-3 reading levels. Specifically, our reading program is designed to support black youths ranging from first grade to sixth grade. Research consistently highlights the existence of a significant literacy achievement gap between black students and their white counterparts.
This gap often starts early in a child’s education and can persist throughout their academic journey and further result in the following:
• High Dropout Rates: Low literacy skills can lead to high dropout rates among black students. As they progress through school, the difficulty of the curriculum increases, and students who struggle with reading may become disengaged and eventually drop out.
• Long-Term Impact: The inability to read proficiently has long-term consequences, limiting career prospects and overall quality of life. This underscores the urgency of addressing reading challenges early in a child’s education.
• Societal Implications: Low literacy rates among black youth can perpetuate cycles of poverty and hinder socio-economic mobility. A reading program can play a vital role in breaking these cycles by providing the necessary support to improve reading skills.
